4 months ago18 years old in High school, driving down I-285 in Atlanta at 2 AM. Headed home after a date with my cheerleader girlfriend, in my red 1968 Pontiac Firebird. By the time the guitar solo hit I was at 110 mph with speakers about to blow out from sheer volume. It’s been downhill ever since.

The song's powerful guitar solo and poignant lyrics could offer a momentary sense of solace and liberation as they dealt with their pain and sought comfort on the open road. It should never be trivialized as a meme. Van Zandt and others lost their lives when the song propelled them to iconic status—a status they will forever hold. Released on their debut album in 1973, they passed away just as they were beginning to enjoy the fame it brought them, never fully realizing the impact this song would have on their fans and other bands and future generations should treat it the same.
